St Cadfan's, Tywyn
Welcome to St Cadfan’s in Tywyn, the only town in the
Bro Ystumanner Ministry Area.
Tywyn is a popular seaside resort close to the Dysynni Estuary. The church dates from the 11th Century; its Norman structure and the famous stone inside the church inscribed with the oldest-known Welsh writing attract visitors from all over the world. The origins of the church go back to the 6th Century when St Cadfan established a hermitage and church following his arrival in Tywyn in about 516 A.D. We recently celebrated, in 2016, 1500 years since Cadfan and his friends arrived at Tywyn. The first church they built was probably in wattle and daub. Subsequent churches were built in wood and perhaps even in stone before the current Norman building.
Visitors are normally welcome to visit the church from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm each day.
In the event of any query the Churchwarden can be contacted on 01654 710640.
In 2023, the vestry floor of St Cadfan's Church was condemned because of extensive dry rot in the floor joists. The wood was to be replaced with cement However as it adjoins two 12th century walls this must be a Limecrete system rather than conventional cement, raising the cost to £40,000. Fund-raising and donations have raised about half the cost. The gap is closed by grants from the National Churches Trust (£10,000), the Wolfson Foundation (£8,000) and the Benefact Trust (£2,300).
The NCT grant comes from their new "Cherish" Fund which is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Our gratitude to those doing the lottery especially as CADW is no longer providing grants.
We expect the work to be started and finished in October 2024.
